You read that title right: SawStop inventor Stephen Gass has upped the ante on SawStop demonstrations by sticking his own finger into a spinning blade, eschewing the old hotdog stand-in that has always been a staple of SawStop demos. You can see a clip of his demo, which was featured on the Discovery Channel’s new TV show Time Warp, in the YouTube video below:
Can you tell that he has a lot of confidence in his product? I’ll bet that this video will spark a lot of copycat performances amongst SawStop demonstrators; sticking your real finger in the path of a whirring table saw blade is much more dramatic, dangerous and compelling than using a hotdog surrogate. Hopefully anyone who decides to repeat this stunt does so very, very carefully.

John White over at FineWoodWorking.com has put together a great video overview of the brand new SawStop Contractor Saw. In the video, Mr. White gives you a full tour around the saw from the mobile base to the inner workings, and he even tests both brake cartridges: the one for standard 10″ blades and the one for dado blades. It’s a really thorough video that is definitely worth watching, so go check it out here!
Mr. White has also written a full review of the saw, which you can find here. It’s a great read, so once you’ve watched the video, head over and have a look at it.
The new SawStop Contractor Saw should be available in dealer showrooms starting this month.

We can write about how simple it is to replace the brake cartridge in a SawStop, but nothing will help you understand exactly how simple it is like a video. With that in mind, have a look at this great YouTube clip from Hermance Machine Co.:
As you can see, replacing the brake cartridge is no more difficult than replacing a blade. In the event of an accident, it is possible to have the SawStop up and running again within minutes if necessary–provided that you keep a spare cartridge around. This is great for classroom situations in particular; students are protected from debilitating injury by the SawStop, and at the same time the saw is not rendered useless to other students for an extended period of time if an accident occurs. Win/win!

The folks over at SawStop are not about to quit with table saws; they’re determined to integrate their technology into all kinds of tools. Recently, they released videos of their prototype band saw and chop saw models. You can see those videos below.
Band Saw:
Chop Saw:
Pretty awesome stuff. SawStop says that their technology could be used in all woodworking products, including handheld circular saws, miter saws, jointers, planers, shapers and band saws and chop saws as you saw above. They’re not saying anything about when (or if!) these prototypes will be ready to hit the market yet, so stay tuned for more information as it comes.

Check out this amazing SawStop video demonstrating how the table saw blade stops in less than 1/200 of a second once it detects any body contact (or as SawStop likes to use in their demos, contact with a hot dog). Click “read more” for an inside look at the saw that’s making a huge splash in the tool world.
With such a massive shock like that, it’s no surprise that the braking mechanism has to be replaced whenever a safety stop takes place. The saw blade will more than likely also require replacement as well. While these replacement parts might end up costing you a few hundred dollars, at least you’ll still have your fingers!
We think it makes the most sense to think of the SawStop’s safety features like you think of a car airbag: hopefully it will never have to be used, but if it does, you’ll be glad that you did have it!
With such an amazing safety feature like this, it is beginning to make sense not to purchase a table saw without it. To get more information on a SawStop cabinet saw, visit ToolKing.com.
