SawStop ICS73230 Cabinet Saw Overview

Today’s SawStop is the ICS73230, which has more horses under the hood than any other SawStop we have covered so far; it features a 7.5 horsepower triple phase 230V motor.

Even with the amazing safety features of the SawStop that can detect a finger or hand and stop the blade, it is still a good idea to use a blade guard whenever you can, and SawStop saws make it easy to install and remove both the blade guard and the riving knife with a quick-change mount. Should the safety feature ever trigger in the event of an accident, it is also easy to replace the brake cartridge that is responsible for stopping the blade. Replacement SawStop brake cartridges are available at ToolKing.com.

SawStop ICS53480 Cabinet Saw Overview

Here’s the first 480V SawStop model that we’ve covered: the ICS53480, which comes with a five horsepower triple phase 480V motor in it.

We’ve mentioned that all SawStops are compatible with 10” blades, but did you know that they’re also compatible with 8” dado blades? And though the amazing safety features are the main attraction of the SawStop, they’re not the only reason to buy one; SawStop saws have great build quality and would still be very nice tools even if they didn’t have the ability to help prevent you from losing appendages.

SawStop ICS53230 Cabinet Saw Overview

Today’s SawStop model is the ICS53230, which comes with a five horsepower triple phase 230V motor in it. This is the first of several three phase SawStop models; the two we’ve covered previously are both one phase.

Like all SawStop saws, the ICS53230 is compatible with all standard 10” blades that are made of conductive metal and don’t have coated teeth. You could install non-conductive blades or blades with coated teeth, but doing so would prevent the safety mechanism from firing in the event of an accident. The saw is of very high-quality, with large cast iron trunnions and bearings that contribute to its weight and produce very smooth cutting.

SawStop ICS51230 Cabinet Saw Overview

Here’s another SawStop model: the ICS51230. The ICS51230 is a step up from the ICS31230 and has a five horsepower single phase 230V motor.

Like the ICS31230 and the rest of the SawStop models, the ICS51230 is heavily built. The saw’s weight makes it run nice and smooth by minimizing vibration. And despite their incredible safety features, SawStop saws do not require you to use a special blade; any 10” blade that isn’t non-conductive and doesn’t have coated teeth is compatible with the safety measures built into the saw.

SawStop ICS31230 Cabinet Saw Overview

The SawStop is not just a major safety innovation; it’s also a well-built cabinet saw that comes in several different configurations to accommodate different needs. The ICS31230 in particular is the most affordable SawStop, featuring a three horsepower single phase 230V motor.

All of the SawStop models are built like tanks (heavy!) to minimize vibration and have high-quality features like the European-style riving knife, which helps prevent kickback. The SawStop also doesn’t require you to use a special proprietary blade; it is compatible with all standard 10” blades that are made of conductive metals and don’t have coated teeth (non-conductive metals and coated blade teeth impede the safety features).

SawStop - The Safer Table Saw

Amongst table saws, safety innovations have been limited to warning stickers and blade guards. According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, every year table saws are involved in over 60,000 injuries (3,000 of which result in amputations) which results in almost $2 billion in injury related costs!

Recently, SawStop, a new power tool manufacturer out of Oregon, sought to change this by designing a new type of saw that can actually detect a finger or other “fleshlike object” touching the spinning blade. Within 5 milliseconds, the saw stops and drops the spinning blade into an internal aluminum block. This significantly reduces injuries and could very well save you from losing a finger.SawStop Table Saw

While not 100% foolproof, it’s still a better solution than a warning sticker or blade guard.

Not only is the new SawStop safer, it’s also an incredibly well-designed cabinet saw with all the features you could possibly want out of a cabinet saw. While it is more expensive than other table saws in it’s class, it’s value is considerable when you think about the costs of a saw-related injury or amputation.

According to SawStop’s website, they are also working on a new contractor table saw for release sometime later this year. This is sure to be a big hit with contractors, handymen, and DIYers!
